Sisterlocks on the town...

Hey all,

So yea... I have officially had my locks for the past almost two days and almost a full week as of this weekend for most of my head. I love the way they look to me! Of course, I had to test them out in public to see the reactions of the masses. I would most likely be correct in assuming that I am one of the few, if not the only, sisterlocked person in the New Britain, CT area. So, knowing this, I was a little nervous to actually go out in public with them. I had to return my rental car anyway so I decided to go without a hat to hide behind lol. As I started walking, I ran into a group of women outside of an Old Navy store (clearly not opening any time soon since it was 9 am). Most of the women paid me no mind, but, like clockwork, there was this one Black relaxed-haired woman who gave me the once over. I promptly ignored her and her look and proceeded on my way while thinking of the Tyra show that was dedicated to Black hair. I, personally, love all textures of Black hair. I thought I looked weird with an afro, but that was just due to it being such a dramatic change. I had basically went into my room and made the impromptu decision to cut my relaxed hair off, leaving the natural roots. No there was no actual big chop for me, but, seeing as my hair was far past my shoulders, reducing it to a mini maybe .5 to 1-in afro was bound to be foreign looking to me. *smiles* Anyway, as I continued on my way to the mall, I found a pattern that emerged. Whether the glances were positive or negative, they were all coming from colored women. Most of the other ethnicities didn't even seem to realize the magnitude of the moment, but the minorities around me did. The most interesting part of it was that none of the negative looks were overly negative, if that makes sense. Like the looks were negative because they were based upon a stereotype of what Black hair should look like and not necessarily directed individually at me. I found most of the looks to vere toward the positive or very positive side though. At first some seemed surprised or confused, but overall there appeared to be a "you go girl" kind of approval behind their eyes. *laughs* Not that the opinions really matter because I was going to do what I wanted to do anyway, but it is nice to see more people opening up to natural Black hair instead of continuing on with stereotypes that are majorily based upon the history of our enslaved ancestors and minorily known/ studied/ understood by the masses that continue them on to our future generations.

All in all I discovered one main thing apart from that which is stated above. There is a certain diva-like attitude that short-haired women have whether it be nature (born with a fierce attitude) or nurture (fierce attitude brought on by the environment) derived. Or at least I have it now... and I like it!!! ;P

P.S. On another note, my head is itchy, but I refuse to buy apple cider vinegar because it stinks even through the bottle. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to stop the itch without adding something that stinks to my hair? No offense to anyone who uses the apple cider rinse.

I'm finally (completely) Sisterlocked!!!

At about 3 PM (Eastern USA time), I officially finished my transition to being sisterlocked. I am sooo happy and excited about them. They look soo beautiful. I was not sure what they would look like once they were done, but they look great... if I say so myself :) As I stated before, pictures will be posted today with this blog. My lovely consultant, Mrs. Webb, was nice enough to take them. She has beautiful sisterlocks as well. I was playing with my phone for most of the pics and chose not to smile because I had just eaten some curry goat haha! So here they are...

The Quest for Sisterlocks...

Greetings everyone and welcome to my new blog. This blog will be primarily focused on my sisterlocks and any other major thoughts swimming around in my head. *smiles*

Well, I guess a great way to start is to detail how this quest began leading up to where I am currently. Once upon a time (lol) I began to think about my hair and how much time managing it took out of my budget as well as of my time. I always thought about transitioning to dreadlocks, but I could not figure out what kind I wanted to get. Since the transition is quite permanent, I figured I needed to be very sure and weigh all of my options before switching. Then, I saw a few blogs about sisterlocks and became more interested in transitioning than ever before (specifically the Makings of Monica... her sisterlocks are so beautiful). They appeared so much easier to manage than relaxed hair. Anyway, so from there the story is quite typical. I contacted a sisterlocks consultant, scheduled my consultation, and then scheduled my installation. I waited about 3 weeks with 6 sisterlocks tester locks in my hair. Washing my hair at least once a week... or should I say my fro lol. I still cannot believe I had an afro... I never thought I would go au natural... ever.

So now I am about 3/4 of the way done with my installation. I had more hair than either I or my consultant predicted lol. The first two days were on Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 AM to about 8:45 PM (excluding a lunch break of about 45 minutes) and Sunday, October 25th from 9:30 AM to about 5:45 PM (also excuding the lunch break). So about 17 hours locking time so far. The last day will be this Thursday, October 29, 2009 beginning at 9:00 AM. Total locking time to be calculated later. Overall, I am excited about the journey ahead and cannot wait to see what my new locks look like once they are completed.
